Cryopexy is a treatment for certain retinal conditions that involves the use of intense cold therapy or freezing.
What are the retinal diseases which can be treated with cryotherapy?
To prevent retinal detachment, seal leaking blood vessels, and slow or stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels caused by diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears are used.
To stop the progression of the abnormal growth, this treatment creates a scar around the retinal tears and abnormal blood vessels.
It is a non-invasive procedure. This procedure necessitates no special preparations. Before the procedure, you should eat normally and take all of your regular medications.
To avoid pain, cryopexy is combined with local anesthesia. During the procedure, your ophthalmologist will use an indirect ophthalmoscope to view the inside of your eye through the pupil while gently pushing on the outside of the eye with a small metal probe to pinpoint the exact location for treatment. Once the appropriate treatment location has been identified, your doctor will activate the probe to deliver the freezing gas, which rapidly freezes the targeted tissue. As the tissue heals, it forms a scar.
