Fellowship Training

Accra Specialist Eye Hospital is a premier training center offering fellowship programs in Phacoemulsification Surgery and Retina Specialization. Our fellowships are designed for ophthalmologists seeking advanced clinical and surgical skills under the guidance of experienced faculty. Each program provides an immersive experience with a strong emphasis on hands-on training, personalized mentorship, and access to state-of-the-art equipment.

Phacoemulsification Fellowship

Our Phacoemulsification training is tailored to meet the specific needs of individual surgeons, enhancing their confidence to perform surgeries independently. With access to advanced instrumentation and expert faculty, our program equips trainees with the essential skills to excel in phaco surgery.

Program Options:

• Beginner Phaco Course: A combination of ECCE/SICS and phaco surgery training for beginners.
• Basic Phaco Course: For surgeons already confident in ECCE/SICS.
• Advanced Phaco Course: For surgeons aiming to master advanced phaco techniques.

Course Duration:
• 1 to 4 weeks, with the opportunity to perform 15 to 100 surgeries depending on individual needs and experience.

Application Requirements:
• A complete CV, degree/diploma certificates, and surgical logbook.

• Certificate: Trainees will receive a signed and stamped certificate indicating the number of surgeries performed, along with a logbook and instructional materials on phaco procedures.

Retina Fellowship

The Retina Fellowship at Accra Specialist Eye Hospital is a comprehensive 18-month to 2-year program designed to train ophthalmologists in both the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases. The curriculum balances theoretical learning with extensive clinical and surgical experience, preparing fellows to handle a wide range of vitreoretinal conditions.

Program Highlights:
• Intensive training in the diagnosis and management of retinal diseases, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases, and trauma-related retinal conditions.

• Hands-on surgical experience in procedures such as scleral buckling, pars plana vitrectomy,
and macular surgery.
• Access to advanced diagnostic tools, including Fundus Fluorescein Angiography, Optical
Coherence Tomography (OCT), and ultrasonography.

Eligibility:
• Practicing ophthalmologists with an interest in vitreoretinal surgery.
• Applicants should have a strong background in anterior segment surgery, with at least 100 Phaco cases and significant experience assisting in vitreoretinal surgeries.

Application Requirements:
• A complete CV, degree/diploma certificates, and a surgical logbook.
• Certificate: At the end of the program, fellows will receive a certificate detailing the surgeries performed during the fellowship.

Program Duration:
• The Retina Fellowship can be completed in 18 months to 2 years, depending on the trainee’s
progress and the complexity of cases handled.

Both fellowship programs are structured to provide high-quality training while accommodating the needs of practicing ophthalmologists. Fellows are given the opportunity to learn and refine their skills in a professional and supportive environment, with access to cutting-edge technology and expert mentorship.
